So…when I decide to cover a song for an album, I have to first acquire a license. To do this, I need to guess at how many copies of the song that I will be selling, and then I pay a rate equal to that amount to cover it.
The cost isn’t very high.
However, if I sell more than I am supposed to…I need to reacquire the license in order to keep selling it.
I covered Downeaster Alexa by Billy Joel on the new album.
I just now found out that it is the best selling song across all of my albums. My version is also the number one result if you search for it on iTunes.
Let’s think about that a second. If you search the song DownEaster Alexa…the Number 1 result is NOT the original by Billy Joel. It is the one by me. iTunes pulls me up before Billy Fucking Joel.
Eep.
I need to buy more royalties now I think.
Hee hee.
